Green Sanctuary

The Green Sanctuary program is a UU program to which individual congregations may apply.

"A Green Sanctuary is a congregation that lives out its commitment to the Earth by creating a sustainable life style for its members as individuals and as a faith community. Sustainable living is not about our material comfort (though these choices are an important part of the overall life style); it is about choosing to live in a way that nurtures life, builds relationships, and rejects material consumption as the sole determinant of happiness." It goals are:

  1. To build awareness of societal environmental issues among UUs.
  2. To generate commitment for personal lifestyle changes.
  3. To motivate UUs to community action on environmental issues.
  4. To build a connection between spiritual practice and environmental consciousness.
  5. To build awareness of and rectify environmental injustices.

In January, 2007, the UU Nashua church officially formed a Green Sanctuary Task Group to begin the process of becoming certified as a Green Sanctuary. To date, the task group has 17 members representing a diverse cross-section of our congregation. This task group evolved from the Climate Change/Renewable Energy Task Group that was formed in the fall of 2006. The name change for the group is recognition that the Green Sanctuary program encapsulates many aspects of the environmental movement and not specific to advocacy at the local, state, and federal level.
