I attend a UU church in Portland, Oregon and have created a website - www.JesusIsALiberal.org as a statement supporting liberal, progressive, thinking Christians. Our website is for those who believe that the teachings of Jesus (and indeed most worldly spiritual prophets) outline a liberal, progressive, tolerant vision for our world. We believe our spirituality compels us to act from conscience, from our hearts, and positive spiritual and moral values – values that actively support good deeds, honesty (personal and professional), the cessation of violence & war, fairness & social justice, the democratic process, gender, sexual & racial equality, a caring compassionate acceptance and tolerance for others, a healthy ecology, ecosystems and planetary environment, sustainable economics, and a holistic, and sustainable vision for our world. We are looking for submissions, articles, and referrals to other websites that we might include on our website. Please visit our site www.JesusIsALiberal.org, sign our guestbook & let us know your thoughts. Peace – Love – Compassion, Jonathan

I'm a 20 year old, british, male 'dead head' (glad to have joined the ranks of diversity) who, like many who have posted, have been searching for answers to life's questions. I've thought of the possibility of choosing a religon a few times, but found none that would allow me to further myself without giving certain restrictions, but without being crudely outdated and cruelly forceful in thier beliefs. To me, a religon should be a supportive 'base,' which allows a person to grow, spiritually and intellectually, and helps to carry them down the 'river of life,' without the bias of time and lineage. It was also a pleasant suprise to happen upon a (seemingly more enlightened) collective, who's thoughts reflect that of my own. I hope to learn much about living, and Life, and again i give thanks for our paths meeting. Blessed be the people! PS. The front page is intimidating

I was brought up in a very conservative Methodist congregation in Lynn, MA. I was admittedly leaning toward earth based spirituality by my last year of Middle School. The pastor and I used to have wonderful debates, and at one time said that I sounded a lot like a Unitarian. It is now more than a decade later, and I have come across your website. After reading the wealth of information you have provided, I will certainly be attending a Sunday Service. I'd like to learn more about the church and our local Congregation. I look forward to meeting you

Hi Folks, It has been quite awhile now since I was a member of the Nashua church, but you are still my church family. I miss you, but I am very happy out here in Sacramento. Things are going well for me, and I do not miss the snowy and cold winters of New Hampshire at all.

Drop me a line to say hello when you get a chance, and drop by for a visit if you happen to be out this way

Take care

About 15 years ago I was in a Salvation Army store in Providence, shopping to outfit my very first apartment. Bought a nice original numbered silkscreen that was in a dirty mat for $15, had it rematted and framed. It's still the best thing on my walls. And it's a Libby (Mount Washington No. 2, 118/213)! Started to research this wonderful artist and found your site. It's great that you're honoring Mr. Libby with a scholarship in his name

My parents placed me in a Lutheran kindergarten class.... I was expelled, for heresy! At that point we started attending the UU church in Columbus, Ohio, but I stopped going after I started college. Fast-forward 25 years.... I found myself in a knock-down-drag-out debate with a pesky Christian Fundamentalist. Finally, in desperation, since I had failed to fall to my knees and accept her beliefs, or to disappear in a puff of greasy smoke, she accused me of being a Unitarian! I thought THAT was an intersting notion, checked out UUA.org, and then found my way to the church in Augusta. It was like coming home

Thank you so much for this site...very educational. I was never baptized and never attended church as a child. As an adult, I have tried to educate myself on different religions and churches, but I have always felt more "spiritual" than religious. I recently started "church-hopping"...trying to find the right fit. None of them fit right. However, I have just been learning about UU's and see that there is a fellowship in my city. Reading the 100 Questions was like, "Wow! I am not alone!" I am excited to attend a UU Fellowship this Sunday for the first time. I also feel this "religion" is one that I will feel comfortable exposing my future children to. Most of all, I want them to learn as much as they can about the world and themselves. I always want them to ask questions. Thanks again

I was drawn to your site by the 100 questions about UU's and was pleasantly surprised to see that your church is in Nashua, NH. I'm from Lowell, MA and have driven by your church but have not attended any services yet. Currently I am serving with the U.S. Army Reserve at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. I have been here since March 23, 2003. When I return (maybe this month; maybe next March) I'll definitely pay a visit. I've been reading and downloading Steve Edington's sermons. They make for great reading and excellent food for thought. I'm not a UU yet (at least not "officially")but I do know that I have found a spirtual home within the UU fellowship. Peace be with you

I have been studying Judeo/Christianity (and other religions)for quite some time. It is good to see a congregation I might join where I would not, automatically, have to consider myself a hipocrite! IE knowing what I know yet being urged to at least 'pretend' to believe whatever they say from the pulpit - disagree, as it often does, with what I have learned over the years

Searching for the meaning of Religion. I took a Quiz on Beliefnet trying to put myself in a catagory. I came up a Secular Humanism, but it didn't quite fit.(Somtimes I think there is a God). But the second choice came up Unitarian Universalism, since reading the 100 Questions, I think a Religious Humanist more aptly applies to me. It looks like Unitarian Universalism fits more to me than any other religion. Is it possible to download the 100 questions and the Tenants of Unitarian Universalism? bpadjr@yahoo.co

A friend of a friend mentioned the Emersonian Church as a possible alternative to the christian churches I recently started attending (I was raised Roman Catholic)...I came to the site to find the church nearest to me, and was drawn like Pooh to Hunny to the rest of the information available. The poem I read in this guest book literally brought a tear to my eye. I'll be there tomorrow, hopefully with my friend. Peace.

Here is a poem which was shared at the peace vigil on March 16 for those who care to print it out and keep it handy:
Wage Peace by Judyth Hill
Wage peace with your breath.
Breathe in firemen and rubble,
breathe out whole buildings
and flocks of redwing blackbirds.
Breathe in terrorists and breathe out sleeping children
and freshly mown fields.
Breathe in confusion and breathe out maple trees.
Breathe in the fallen
and breathe out lifelong friendships intact.
Wage peace with your listening:
hearing sirens, pray loud.
Remember your tools:
flower seeds, clothes pins, clean rivers.
Make soup.
Play music, learn the word for thank you in three languages.
Learn to knit, and make a hat.
Think of chaos as dancing raspberries,
imagine grief as the outbreath of beauty
or the gesture of fish.
Swim for the other side.
Wage peace.
Never has the world seemed so fresh and precious.
Have a cup of tea and rejoice.
Act as if armistice has already arrived.
Don't wait another minute.

I just found out about UU and the more I read about it, the more sense it makes. I feel that ny original church hase gotten into the hands of untra-conservatives who think that the Dark Ages were a great time. I feel so alienated that I rarely go to church (except on x-mas,easter and palm sunday,or when somebody dies or gets married and my family pushes me.

As an active duty military person stationed abroad, I have found it increasingly difficult to find people with whom I can communicate about spiritual matters. There is certainly no end to the "traditional" religions, but I look for what is contained in your electronic pages. I only hope that your congregation really understands and appreciates (I'm sure it does) the wonderful resource you have amongst you. I am one of the billions of victims of 'organized religion' - one of the addicts to a philosophy that explains nothing, keeps people afraid, ignorant (and as we have seen with some of our Muslim brethren as of recent) downright mean and destructive. I do believe in a God, but not that white-haired guy on the top of the Sistine Chapel. I do love the Episcopalian church, but seem to find that it is missing the point of life itself, as do most Christian churches. 2000 years of splitting hairs over who was a virgin, whether she had sex afterwards, how many angels can dance on the head of a pin, etc and blah blah blah. This is absolute stupidity. I personally believe in God, but I cannot see how someone else can give me a more intimate relationship with It via threats and fear mongering. If the source of creation, intelligence and information is supposed to be all loving, why should I fear It? I want to know It, to love It and become one with It. I am a hardcore Libertarian in every sense of the word. Is there a spriritual home for me here? I am certain that the path to God is within me (and within every individual), and through me. I cannot seem to find God through someone else, and in retrospect consider the entire idea foolish from the get-go. I feel that God is so close to me that I am blinded by my own stupidty and subscription to authoritarian religious dogma. Considering that, is UU right for me? Anyone is welcome to respond to me at khaney@bham.rr.com Thank you.

We are each seeking own our spiritual enlightenment and would like to involve our children in a church and ultimately allow them to make personal decisions regarding worship. We juat had a baby boy and are not sure where we stand on baptising him and would like to hold a ceremony for him, however not forcing a particular organized religion onto him. I never in my life thought that my husband and I would find a "church" that thinks along the same lines as we do. I have joined and then left many churches due to the fact that I was forced to "believe" what another person taught me rather than what my heart and mind were telling me. For all of these years I have longed for a group of people who understand me. Unfortunately, now that I have found that, I am unable to find a church near me. I would love nothing more than to obtain the education that is required and start up a church in this area. I will be visiting your site often. Best wishes to all.

Most of the comments on here say it all. We all wish UU had been easier to find? I came upon it when trying to find a meaningful location and ceremony for my wedding - my fiance and I are "beyond interfaith," since he's an atheist and I've often been strongly religious in the traditional sense. Not only have we found a ceremony we can both fully connect to (which I didn't think possible), I'm interested in attending UU services, and my parents already want to join! This site is extremely helpful because it has everything a "seeker" may want to know (minus direct experience, of course) about UU. This is what I call sanity - bless you!

After careful review of your beliefs and statements, I've concluded that you have no definitive beliefs whatsoever. I'm wondering where I might find a site that might define a little more about your beliefs, i.e., not believing in the bible, not believing that Jesus was born of a virgin. Where do these specific beliefs come from and how have these final conclusions been drawn? I hope to find a few answers as I study more about your beliefs, but more importantly, I pray that you and whoever reads this may start an indepth spiritual search within yourselves. Thank you for your time and pray my post will not be accidentally erased.

I've been reading your beliefs because I've always wanted to find someone that understands what I've grown to believe is true. My new boyfriend is a UU, and I also just wanted to find out what his religion was about so that I could better understand him. As I read, I realized that all my beliefs are written down here. It's odd because, as I got to a Catholic school, it's rare to find someone that understands. Thanks.

I never knew there was an actual "church" out there with the same beliefs I had. Not that I desperately need to "belong" to any group, but it feels comforting, I don't feel so alone in my "religion" anymore. There is no UU congregation close to where I live (one and one half hour drive) so I am surfing the internet, found your site and am in awe! I will return often to this site and other UU sites. Someone who knew me well had once mentioned that I should explore two religious options; unfortunately, the first was a group that turned out to be a fundamentalist Christian singles organization. The other was the Unitarian Church. After finding out about the first, I was not interested in what Unitarianism might be about. I thought it was just another Protestant denomination, like Presbyterians, Episcopalians or Lutherans. I was raised a Methodist and had later embraced a secular humanist science-based philosophy, but I had no religion in my life. On the internet one day, I impulsively typed in Unitarian in a search engine and found your site. The next fifteen minutes led to a major change in my life. I did not consider it possible, with my understanding of what religion consisted of, to find any organization that I completely agreed with, but before I was halfway through the 100 Questions, I knew that I had found a home. I went to the local Unitarian Church (only 3 miles away!), the first time I had voluntarily attended a Sunday service in decades, and joined the next month, February, 2002. I am now involved in several committtees (how UU's love committees!) and have explored a whole new aspect of spirituality. Thank you for posting this informative site-I've recommended it(over the official UUA site) to anyone interested in why I have become a happier person lately.

I wish there was a UU congregation nearby. I attended UU in Portsmouth,NH as a child and once in Hilton Head, SC and it's the closest to my personal beliefs I can get. One thing I search for these days is advice on parenting (ages 7 through 15) and providing spiritual guidance for these young minds. We do not attend a church as neither my husband or I agree with the close-mindedness of most in our area.

I just read though the whole page on UU's. I never heard of UU's until I took a quiz about what religions would be best for me and all my belifs were 98% compatiable with UU. UU sounds like something I would like to learn more about and even go to a church. How do I get to go to a uu church? DO I call them? is there a directory that I can find email address locally where I live? If anyone reads this can you please give me some ideas on how to conntact a church. Thank You Angie D

I am Wiccan, my wife is Lutheran. I am also ordained. She never has wanted to attend Circle with me , but lately her congregations 'politics' is starting to take their toll. Perhaps we can attend a service together, sort of neutral ground if you will. It may just open her eyes, and make a strong marriage even stronger-Beleesd Be; Eric

I'm seeking out a group of open-minded individuals, and thought a return to my UU roots might be the way to go. I'm having some difficulty meeting people who have an interest in joining the world they live in rather than escaping it with drugs and alcohol (at least, within the twenty-something age group). I'd love to get to know this congregation, and to join you in some of your social action activities. Perhaps I can do some good and make friends all at once!
