Annual Report 2001-2002

Worship and Services Committee

This year the Worship and Services Committee contributed to church life in the following ways:

At the beginning of the year, and at other times as needed, we met with Rev. Edington to discuss the schedule of church services and related events.

We also purchased large print hymnals to assist those with limited vision.

In November, the committee designed a “Harvest of Gratitude” service on the Sunday following Thanksgiving, which featured contributions from several church members and an opportunity for expanded Joys and Concerns.

In December, we purchased materials, designed, and supervised the installation of holiday decorations intended to promote themes of peace, light, and connection to the earth. Our thanks to the many volunteers who made quick work of decorating the sanctuary!

Also in December, we worked with interested members of the congregation to create a Solstice Service that was attended by approximately 65 people – a record attendance.

In February, we presented an afternoon concert by Philip Mentor, a classically trained baritone who was born in the West Indies. The concert featured African American spirituals along with an educational narrative describing their role in the lives of slaves in the U.S. and in the Caribbean. The concert was coordinated with the Sunday service, both of which raised money for the UUA Whitney Young Urban Ministry Fund. We are grateful to the volunteers who contributed to the success of the concert and reception that followed.

During late winter and spring, we consulted with Rev. Edington in order to advertise for, interview, and select a seminary student for the summer minister position. Our choice is Carol Allman, who has completed her second year of seminary at Andover Newton Theological School. This year there will be summer services in the chapel every Sunday except for Labor Day weekend.

Finally, please consider joining the Worship & Services Committee. You’ll be contributing a great deal to the vitality of our congregational life together.

Respectfully submitted,

October Craig
