Personnel Committee
Annual Report for the 2001-2002 Church Year
The Personnel Committee is a committee of the Executive Board that was approved as a permanent or standing committee at last year's annual meeting. The charter developed for the committee and ratified by the Executive Board states:
It is the goal of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Nashua to provide a productive and safe work environment for all staff members, with each staff member's compensation commensurate with the requirements of the position and the performance and experience of the person holding the position.
To assist in achieving this goal, the Personnel Committee, on behalf of the Executive Board and in collaboration with the appropriate individuals or committees with staff oversight responsibilities, is charged with the following responsibilities:
4 Establishing and maintaining church personnel policies that are approved by the Executive Board.
4 Ensuring accurate job descriptions are established and maintained for each staff position.
4 Ensuring periodic performance appraisals are conducted for all staff members, based upon documented, communicated, and job-appropriate criteria.
4 Reviewing and recommending staff compensation (i.e., salary and benefits), based upon comparable data obtained from the UUA, other churches, and other appropriate sources.
4 Addressing other personnel-related areas at the request of the Executive Board.
Clarifying Notes:
1. The term "staff" includes all staff employed by the church except for the Minister.
2. The Personnel Committee will not assume supervisory responsibility for any staff members but will work collaboratively with the appropriate supervisory individuals and committees within the existing organizational structure to ensure the above responsibilities are fulfilled.
The members of the Personnel committee are Nancy Dowey, Jack Law, Gary Lerude (chair), Elizabeth Lewis, Jamie McNamee, and Bud Swanson. Linda Donaldson-Guidi serves as the liaison to the Executive Board.
Among the committee's activities and accomplishments this year have been
4 Reviewing and updating staff job descriptions,
4 Clarifying the staff organization and reporting relationships,
4 Understanding staff compensation and benefits,
4 Identifying relevant sources for comparative data on staff compensation and benefits,
4 Formulating recommendations on benefits, evaluations, and overall personnel policies for church staff.
The committee is making two initial recommendations to the Executive Board to improve the benefits we offer and to help address the increasing administrative and management responsibilities and workload of the staff. Timing of the implementation will depend upon the results of the pledge drive and other church funding priorities.
